A Decade of Neglect of Public Tennis Courts Shown in Pictures

The pictures are similar but they are taken ten years apart at two Chapel Hill public tennis facilities. Here is a picture from Ephesus tennis courts in 2012.

And here is a picture of current Cedar Falls tennis courts in 2022.

Cedar Falls 2022

Both pictures say that nets have been taken down because the courts are unsafe to play on. The first picture was posted in Facebook with the title “Chapel Hill – Southern Part of Heaven unless you are a tennis player”. The second picture describes two courts at Cedar Falls which are unsafe to play on today.

East HS JV teams use these courts, and just imagine parents watching their children play on the remaining four courts which are also in terrible condition and barely playable. Would any other racquet sport ask their players to use courts in such poor conditions?

Our Chapel Hill citizens of families, parents, students, youth, and adults deserve more and better public tennis facilities. Seems like our taxes are high enough that we could afford to maintain and be proud of the few public town tennis courts that exist. And as the town population grows, start making plans for more and better public tennis courts.

Ten years have past but the messages and the signs are the same. Let’s get the signs down, fix and maintain the public tennis courts and facilities, and never ever see these signs again.

Update (10/12/2022): The Ephesus tennis courts were last resurfaced in 2012 which was after the first picture was taken. The courts have many cracks today and are slated to be resurfaced this month. This is only a temporary measure with no guarantee since cracks will likely reappear. The goal is to identify and acquire funding to do a complete renovation at some future date.

A project is underway to renovate the Cedar Falls courts within the next two years, however at this time, there has not been enough funding secured to begin construction of this project. Until this time, two of the Cedar Falls courts will remain unsafe to play tennis on.

Oh so true, so disappointing and sad to see this. What an embarrassment. Chapel Hill tennis players, made up of local youths, students and adults deserves better than this.
Hope that the town find the additional funds to ‘FINALLY’ redo the Cedar Falls and Hargraves courts. It is years and years, overdue! Thank you!
