Bicycle Lanes and Junior Courts

There is value in both, but …

The tennis courts at Cedar Falls are planned to be renovated. However, the proposal originally proposed by Parks and Rec was to eliminate a full size court from six to five and replace with 4 junior tennis courts. See town proposal <here>. The question is not whether junior courts are good, but at what expense and benefit.

All the full sized courts are currently used by the East Chapel Hill HS JV teams. Once the courts are renovated there will be even more demand for full use of courts in the evening. There is also the possibility with six courts to rent out the courts to tennis associations. So why reduce the number of courts to five?

When CH Parks and Rec was asked who was making this proposal, the only response was to provide links to organizations depicting the value of junior courts. Yes we can agree that junior courts have value. But the question is not whether they are valuable but are they more valuable then removing a full size court. No one from the tennis community (to our knowledge) has said this is a good idea.

The analogy is “should we remove a traffic lane on 15-501 to add four bicycle lanes?” There are lots of reasons why bicycle lanes are valuable but probably not at the expense of taking away a car lane on the already congested 15-501. Think about it.

Full size courts can have lines added for juniors (60 ft court) as has been done before. More recently, pickleball lines have been added to tennis courts, which takes the courts away from tennis players, including juniors.
